One of the most powerful government's in the world shut down on Saturday after the president and US Congress failed to reach an agreement for funding federal services.
In a twitter post, president Trump blamed the democrat lawmakers.
He said, "This is the one year anniversary of my presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present"
"Democrats are far more concerned with illegal immigrants than they are with our great military or safety at our dangerous southern border," he said. "They could have easily made a deal but decided to play shutdown politics instead".
Last week, Trump rejected a bipartisan Senate deal that would have accomplished that as well as hand the White House $2.7 billion in new money for immigration enforcement at America's borders.
Senate Republicans and Democrats were unable to agree on a stopgap funding measure to continue government services.
So,What Happens During US Government Shutdown?
The senate fell short of votes needed for funding proposal, the United States Federal Government officially shutdown on Friday at midnight.
However, the shutdown doesn't mean all the federal funded agencies, programs and services will halt.
Whoever works for agencies and departments that are considered nonessential, including agencies that pay out small business loans and process passport requests, will cease to work until Congress is able to agree on a bill for the federal budget. The employees from these departments will be put on "furlough."
The shutdown will continue till the congress agrees on a bill for federal budget.
The Military is considered essential and would still report for duty during the shutdown. But the troops, including those in combat would most likely not get paid during shutdown. If the shutdown goes on for weeks, about 1.3 million active-duty military will be expected to work potentially without pay. The military is currently paid through February 1.
The Shutdown will affect:
- Zoo's,National Parks or Museums.
- Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco.
- Firearms and explosives.
- Social Security.
- Air traffic Control.
- Transportation Security Administration.
- US Postal Service.
Members of Congress will continue to receive paychecks because it's written into law.
WASHINGTON DC:
"Washington, DC, is open," Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement published Friday. "DC government will continue to provide services to our residents, the services they expect and deserve, uninterrupted."
The Republicans and the Democrats blamed each other for the predicament.
"What we've just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision by Senate Democrats to shove aside millions of Americans for the sake of irresponsible political games," McConnell said.
Schumer said his party took significant steps to reach a deal, including raising the possibility of funding for Trump's proposed wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, which they have ardently opposed.
"It's almost as if you were rooting for a shutdown," Schumer said in comments aimed directly at Trump.
The Defense Department said its combat operations in Afghanistan and other military activities would continue, while federal law enforcement officers also would remain on duty.
But without a deal, most operations in the federal government will be disrupted. Hundreds of thousands of government employees will be put on temporary unpaid leave, including many of the White House's 1,700 workers.
On Monday, government employees ranging from financial regulators and tax collectors to scientists and civilian staff at the Pentagon will have to stay away from work.
Some tourists appeared unaware of the shutdown while others expressed frustration at lawmakers' failure to reach a deal.
